The interview was conducted on November
18, 1999.
The owners:
The store is owned by Francesco
Dreyfus and run by Karl Gonzales, who is from Denver, Colorado. Gonzales'
parents were living in Munich when they asked him to settle over. That
was a couple of years ago.
Dreyfus and Gonzales founded the
store as an enterprise between friends. They decided to sell groceries
because it was a good opportunity for them to start something on their
own.
The store
The store is also called Schmankerlnische
in order to attract German customers who are more familiar with the German
name. G&A purchases the groceries from a big importer, which is the
reason why they only have a certain number of products. It is very expensive
to purchase American goods in Germany.
Among their products they have
Oreo Cookies, BacOs, Jiffy, Pam, Cheese Balls, Corn Ships,
Muffins, Cesar Salad Dressings, Donuts, Aunt Jemina's, Raisin Bran, Dr.
Pepper, Root Beer etc...
Mr. Gonzales employs both American
and English people. He is doing this because he is also selling sandwiches
and warm lunches. He said: "When I say make a BLT, they know what I mean,
you know what I mean?" Mr. Gonzales has to work 15 hours a day to keep
the store running. Although he has an American store, he has to go by German
law, thus he is not allowed to have the store open on Sundays. Although
his location in the Baaderstr. is not so bad, he would rather like to have
the store in the Fussgängerzone at the Marienplatz, since he would
have more customers.
The atmosphere in the store is very
friendly and one has a good time enjoying all the American goods.
Come in and find out...
